He retired in 1982 after serving as a player-coach. Redknapp had transitioned into management by 1983, a mere year after concluding his playing career. Bournemouth, a Third Division team at the time, selected Redknapp as their manager, and he managed to prevent the Cherries from relegation. The manager had successfully guided Bournemouth to a Third Division title just three years later.
Despite the fact that Bournemouth were ultimately relegated from the second division after only two seasons, Redknapp had demonstrated his managerial abilities with the south coast side. Originating as an aide to Billy Bonds, he joined West Ham in 1992.

This was his final extended tenure as a manager. Redknapp served as the manager of Birmingham City and the Jordan national team for limited periods prior to his retirement in 2017.
