“Here we go” – A defender set to move to Newcastle United FC for £15 million after being turned down for a deal in the summer

Jamal Lewis, the Newcastle United defender, has returned in anticipation of the 2024-25 season.

During the 2023-24 season, the 26-year-old was loaned to Watford in the Championship. Lewis returned to Tyneside for pre-season, and the Hornets declined the opportunity to extend his loan agreement this summer.

Lewis has promptly reintegrated himself into Eddie Howe’s roster, in contrast to Isaac Hayden and Ryan Fraser, who are still under contract with Newcastle but are excluded from the first team’s plans.

Before departing for Japan, Newcastle’s left-back participated in the team’s initial two preseason friendlies. Although he was not present in the 4-1 victory over Urawa Red Diamonds on Wednesday evening, he may return to the field against Yokohama F. Marinos at the Japan National Stadium on Saturday.

When queried about Lewis’ future at Newcastle, Howe responded, “I believe we will determine that with Jamal.” I have always held him in high regard and rated him highly, since I was a huge admirer of him during his time in Norwich.

“He has a positive attitude, is eager to improve, and has greatly benefited from his loan period. It has been a pleasure to work with him.” He has trained exceptionally well since rejoining the group.

“In the end, a great deal will depend on his desires. It may be challenging for me to ensure that he continues to play football, so we will have to wait and see.”

It is anticipated that Lewis will depart Newcastle in some capacity this summer. In 2020, the defender cost £15 million to transfer from Norwich City to St James’ Park. He has since appeared in 36 matches for the club.
