How Premier League explain Jordan Pickford’s brilliant penalty save after Newcastle United player Anthony Gordon missed a crucial penalty kick
Everton conceded a penalty shot against Newcastle after Jordan Pickford denied Anthony Gordon from the penalty spot.
Upon his return to Goodison Park, Anthony Gordon was denied a golden opportunity to score from the penalty spot by Jordan Pickford.
Gordon’s former teammate, who was to his left, saved his attempt with his legs, which elicited chanting of “England’s number one” and celebrations throughout Goodison Park.
The same stands had been groaning in exasperation minutes prior when referee Craig Pawson stepped up to the pitchside monitor following a Newcastle corner that appeared to have been dealt with.
Nevertheless, Pickford was not alarmed by the assault; however, he could observe James Tarkowski engaging in an off-the-ball dispute with Sandro Tonali in his vicinity.
Later, the Premier League matchday center clarified the reason for the penalty awarded: “VAR reviewed the referee’s decision to not award a penalty for Tarkowski’s challenge on Tonali and recommended an on-field review, concluding that the action was not considered to be a footballing one.” Newcastle United was subsequently awarded a penalty by the referee.
However, Everton and Pickford emerged victorious in their confrontation with former Blue Gordon, much to the enjoyment of the home crowd who had previously witnessed VAR reverse an Abdoulaye Doucoure goal for offside.
