Portsmouth Concerns Mount Over Colby Bishop & Josh Murphy – Fan Pundit Issues Warning
It’s been a steady start to the season for Portsmouth in the Championship, but one problem continues to worry supporters – the lack of goals from Colby Bishop and the team’s heavy reliance on Josh Murphy.
Pompey avoided the drop last season and strengthened with 11 summer signings, but their 2-0 defeat to Sheffield Wednesday highlighted major issues in attack. John Mousinho’s side sit mid-table, just two points off the play-offs, yet they are among the lowest scorers in the division with only four goals.
Bishop, who netted 11 times last term after returning from heart surgery, has scored just once in six games this campaign. Despite creating chances, his conversion rate is down at 9.1% – the second-worst in the league behind Kyogo Furuhashi.
FLW’s Portsmouth pundit Miltos Ioannidis defended Bishop, insisting the real problem lies in a lack of creativity and back-up options. He pointed to Josh Murphy’s absence as a turning point:
“I hate to say this, but we look like a one-dimensional side. Without Murphy, we’re unrecognisable. If Bishop has an off day, there’s nobody else ready to step up.”
With Thomas Waddingham out injured and Makenzie Kirk still raw after arriving from Scotland, Pompey’s attack looks light. Ioannidis warned that Mousinho may regret not signing a proven striker in the summer:
“I think Bishop can still reach 15 goals with the right service, but at the moment we don’t have enough depth. Relying so heavily on Murphy and Bishop is a dangerous game.”
Unless Mousinho finds a solution quickly, Pompey risk stalling in their promotion push.
