Newcastle United striker Yoane Wissa has spoken about the prospect of linking up with club-record signing Nick Woltemade once he recovers from injury.
Wissa himself is eyeing a return to action next month as he recovers from a knee problem picked up while on international duty with DR Congo. The 29-year-old joined the Magpies from Brentford on deadline day in a £55million deal, but the setback has delayed his debut. Initially thought to be minor, Eddie Howe later confirmed the injury would keep him out for seven games, including the Champions League clash with Barcelona.
Offering an update before Newcastle’s Carabao Cup tie against Bradford City, Howe explained:
“He’s receiving treatment and won’t need surgery. We’re hopeful he’ll be back after the international break, ideally in time for the Brighton match.”
Wissa’s Absence Felt in Attack
Signed on the back of a 20-goal season at Brentford, Wissa was expected to ease the burden in attack following Alexander Isak’s departure. However, his spell on the sidelines has left Newcastle relying heavily on Woltemade.
The £60m German forward made an immediate impact with a debut goal against Wolves but struggled for consistency afterward, missing out against Barcelona before returning in the draw at Bournemouth, where he failed to register a shot on target.
With both forwards working their way into form and fitness, Howe will be hoping to soon unleash them together as Newcastle look to find their attacking rhythm in Europe and domestically.
