Michael Owen has contemplated his career and the animosity that Liverpool and Newcastle United supporters have directed towards him.
Owen was at the pinnacle of his career during his tenure at Liverpool, earning the Ballon D’Or at the age of 22 in 2001. Owen departed The Reds after scoring 158 goals in 297 games to join Spanish giants Real Madrid.
However, the former England international only remained at the Santiago Bernabéu for one season before returning to the Premier League with Newcastle United. Owen has since admitted that he had a strong desire to return to Liverpool over
Newcastle and even had a clause in his contract with The Magpies that would enable him to rejoin the Merseyside club.Ultimately, a deal was never completed, and Owen’s tenure at St. James’ Park was characterised by injury before concluding in relegation.
Owen was a free agent at that time, as he was no longer under contract with Newcastle. He ultimately joined Manchester United, Liverpool’s fiercest rivals, out of all the organisations.
It was a decision that resulted in Owen becoming an unpopular figure on both Tyneside and Merseyside. Newcastle and Liverpool supporters would routinely boo Owen when he appeared in Premier League matches against them.
It is Owen acknowledged that he is no longer beloved, despite his status as a hero at Liverpool. Owen expressed his thoughts on his career in an interview with The Telegraph, stating,
“I relinquished control over my career and the public’s perception of it the moment I decided to join Real Madrid.” Publicity “I no longer enjoy visiting Anfield because I am aware that I am not in return loved.”
I typically only attend when I am employed. It is not that I am apprehensive about attending; rather, I used to bury my head when returning to the academy to visit acquaintances for an extended period of time.
Since then, I have consistently reminded myself, “I should not have been experiencing those emotions.” “People claim that his decision to join Manchester United was the reason.”
However, the entire globe is aware that some historical events have been altered in that location. Owen felt that the animosity directed at him from Liverpool supporters occurred during his time with Newcastle, despite his desire to return to Anfield throughout his career.
“Resentment was directed towards me prior to that time when I played for Newcastle,” he continued. “Despite the fact that my Newcastle contract included a provision that allowed me to re-sign for Liverpool each summer.”
“The Manchester United aspect is now a more convenient stick to beat me with, but when I returned to Anfield for the first time as a Newcastle player, there were a few hundred, and possibly a thousand, supporters who were booing me.”
“The emotions that I, my parents, and my former Liverpool teammates experienced are indelible.” Anyone who comprehended and valued the situation’s actuality was disappointed on my behalf.
Owen scored 30 goals in 79 matches for Newcastle during his four-year tenure. He subsequently tallied 17 goals in 52 games for Manchester United before concluding his career with Stoke City in 2013.
