“I have no regrets” – Ange Postecoglou encountered criticism for accepting a surprise new position just one month after her emotive departure. The 59-year-old, who was terminated by
Tottenham following their Europa League triumph, departed on his own terms while overseeing his national team; however, not all were thrilled with his decision. Before being promoted to lead his country in 2013, Postecoglou had coached two top-tier A-League teams. His tenure as leader commenced with a brief preparation for the 2014 World Cup.
The Socceroos concluded at the bottom of their group in Brazil without a single point, and Postecoglou’s rebuilding process commenced shortly thereafter with a victory in the 2015 Asian Cup. In November 2017, he announced his departure in a rare emotive press conference just two weeks after returning to the
World Cup in the fourth year of his five-year contract. “The journey for me as Socceroos coach has come to an end after a great deal of thought and soul-searching,” he stated in front of the media. “I am honored to have had the opportunity to coach the national team of my country.”
To have led them to victory at the 2014 World Cup, to have secured the Asian Cup in 2015, and to have now qualified for the World Cup the following year. I stated that we would accomplish it, and we have. The situation then took an emotional turn as Postecoglou repeatedly paused to clear his nose and take deep breaths while discussing the impact the job had on his family.
