I have played for Newcastle United in the Premier League and UEFA Cup. Presently, I am delighted with my new position at South Shields. Despite the fact that Newcastle United made several high-profile acquisitions during the summer, the 2005/06 season was a perplexing one for the club, as they observed their team struggle to find its form for significant portions of the campaign.

Graeme Souness was endeavouring to establish his own identity within the Magpies squad, which necessitated the acquisition of Chelsea midfielder Scott Parker, Turkish international Emre, and a club record signing in the form of Real Madrid and England striker Michael Owen. The Sir Bobby Robson era had been archived as a cherished memory.

The season appeared to be reaching its conclusion when Souness was dismissed in early February, despite a few notable victories, including a 4-2 victory at West Ham United and a 1-0 home victory against Arsenal. Glenn Roeder, the academy director, was appointed as the club’s manager. Alan Shearer scored the club’s 201st goal on his managerial debut, and United went on a run of 10 victories in their last 15 games to qualify for the much-maligned Intertoto Cup.

Matty Pattison, a South African-born midfielder, made his senior debut in the final months of the season. He had previously suffered two severe knee injuries during his tenure in the Magpies academy. Pattison appeared in the first team against Everton, West Bromwich Albion, and Birmingham City. Pattison would make an additional seven Premier League appearances in the subsequent season.

He would also take part in the UEFA Cup against Serie A club Palermo on the same night that Tim Krul made a stunning debut and 17-year-old Andy Carroll became the youngest player to represent the Magpies in European competition. Following his departure from United in November 2007, Pattison played for Norwich City and South African club Bidvest Wits.

He later returned to the North East to spend time with non-league rivals Gateshead, Blyth Spartans, Whickham, and Dunston UTS. South Shields also achieved success, and Pattison has since assumed an assistant manager position with the National League North club, following his tenure at the Mariners International Academy.

The South Africa international, who has been capped twice, is enthusiastic about the prospect of collaborating with Elliott Dickman, the manager of South Shields and a former academy coach of the Magpies. He has been impressed by the transformations that have occurred at the club since his departure in the summer of 2018.
