I joined Newcastle United in order to earn more money; however, I should have waited for Leeds and Arsenal.Kieron Dyer has disclosed that Newcastle United was not his initial choice, as he had garnered interest from Arsenal and Leeds United.

Dyer was one of the most highly-regarded youth players in England in the summer of 1999, following his meteoric rise with Ipswich Town. However, subsequent to the Tractor Boys’ failure to secure promotion to the Premier League, numerous clubs implemented their strategies.

Arsenal, Leeds, and West Ham United submitted proposals for the 20-year-old player. However, Newcastle, which is managed by Ruud Gullit, emerged victorious after submitting the most expensive offer.

Dyer travelled to the North East to complete his relocation without any time to contemplate. Nevertheless, the attacking midfielder now regrets not waiting to see if Arsenal or Leeds increased their offer. He stated to Open Goal, “Newcastle was not my initial preference; it was simply the more lucrative bid.”

“The amount was £6.5 million.”If I had been aware of the information I now possess and had conversed with all of the managers I have encountered, I would have known that Arsenal was interested in purchasing me as a right-back.

Harry Redknapp, who was utilising a three-man defence at West Ham United, perceived me as a right wing-back. Ruud Gullit and David O’Leary, who were in charge at Newcastle and Leeds, perceived me as a midfielder.

“I am aware that Leeds and Arsenal submitted bids of £5 million.” Subsequently, I am summoned to the office of the manager, George Burley, who informs me that Newcastle has submitted a proposal.

He instructs me to travel to Stanstead Airport and undergo a medical examination. You do not have the opportunity to contemplate it.

“As soon as my agent informs me of the agreement, I am in agreement.” This is not intended as an insult to Newcastle; I had an extraordinary experience there, playing Champions League football with incredible fans.

However, had I given it some consideration, I would have remained patient and waited to see if Leeds and Arsenal would have increased their offers, as Arsenal would have been the ultimate dream.

Gullit was dismissed after only five Premier League games during Dyer’s tenure on Tyneside and was succeeded by Sir Bobby Robson. Dyer’s tenure at Newcastle was relatively successful, despite the numerous injuries he endured.

He scored 38 goals in 250 appearances for the team and was selected for the 2002-03 PFA Premier League Team of the Year.
