Ibrox damage bill revealed after dramatic Rangers vs Celtic incidents

Rangers were knocked out of the Scottish Cup after losing a dramatic penalty shootout against Celtic on Sunday at Ibrox Stadium.

However, the result itself quickly became overshadowed by the chaotic scenes that unfolded after the final whistle. Supporters from both sides spilled onto the pitch, with violent clashes breaking out involving stewards and police officers. Parts of the stadium were also damaged during the disorder.

Ibrox suffers major damage

Reports from Herald Scotland suggest the financial impact of the destruction could run into hundreds of thousands of pounds.

Much of the damage occurred in the Broomloan Stand, although other sections of the stadium were also affected. Around 7,500 Celtic supporters were located in the stand after being granted a full away allocation for the high-profile clash.

Following Celtic’s victory, hundreds of their supporters entered the pitch. In the process, LED advertising boards were trampled and destroyed, adding further costs for Rangers.

Although police officers and stewards attempted to create a barrier to keep fans off the field, many supporters still managed to bypass security and reach the pitch.

Graffiti and attempted ticket fraud

Additional controversy emerged after graffiti was reportedly discovered inside the away section, mocking victims of the historic Ibrox disaster.

Before kick-off, authorities also dealt with attempts by supporters without tickets to gain entry to the stadium using counterfeit passes. Some individuals reportedly tried to access the ground through disabled entrance points.

Arrests and ongoing investigation

Police Scotland have confirmed that nine arrests have been made so far in connection with the incidents.

Among those charged is a 54-year-old man accused of assaulting a police officer. Another man, aged 47, faces charges after allegedly attacking a coach and one of the players.

Additionally, three men aged 20, 23 and 54 were arrested over a serious assault on a man near the stadium shortly after the match ended.

All individuals involved are expected to appear before Glasgow Sheriff Court at a later date.

Broadcaster Sky Sports described the scenes as “shocking”, while Chief Superintendent Emma Croft indicated that the number of arrests could increase as the investigation continues.
