In the midst of Manchester United negotiations, 22-year-old Loanee Mason Greenwood has already suggested that a transfer decision be made
With only one year remaining on his contract, the attacker will depart Manchester United this summer. Negotiations regarding his permanent departure are currently ongoing.
A Manchester United exit is almost certain, and Mason Greenwood has no shortage of suitors this summer.
Sir Jim Ratcliffe had indicated in February that a resolution regarding his departure had not been reached, despite the fact that the club had announced in August that he would continue his career outside of Old Trafford in response to the fan backlash against their efforts to reintegrate him into the squad.
After being arrested on charges of attempted rape, assault occasioning actual bodily injury, and controlling and coercive behavior in January 2022, Greenwood has not played for the club. These allegations were ultimately dismissed in February 2023. The player has consistently denied all allegations.
With only one year remaining on his contract, MEN Sport has learned that efforts to secure Greenwood’s definitive departure from United are progressing. Among the numerous organizations that are interested in the 22-year-old, Juventus, Valencia, and Benfica are just three.
Lazio and United are presently in discussions regarding a potential transfer, as the player garnered interest from both clubs during his time in Spain during the previous campaign. Additionally, United is in discussions with Marseille, a French club.
Greenwood contributed 10 goals and six assists in 36 matches while on loan at Getafe during the season. The Spanish team is eager to facilitate a return agreement for the forward, who stated that he was made to feel “happy” during his time at the club last season.
Last week, Angel Torres, the head of Getafe, appeared to indicate that the player was on the brink of a return. He stated, “We will provide positive news in the near future, and I am optimistic that he will remain for an additional year.”
“It appears that he will continue for an additional year.” The number of potential outcomes increases with each passing day; however, it is imperative to exercise caution.
The attacker may be too expensive for them and several other potential suitors, and any suggestion of a loan deal would require United to extend his contract in order to retain value. This decision would be met with significant criticism.
Furthermore, Greenwood seemed to suggest last month that a return to Getafe was not a certainty, despite earning the player of the season award.
In reality, his farewell message to the club’s supporters implied that he would be working elsewhere.
Upon the conclusion of the season in May, Greenwood expressed his profound gratitude to the Getafe family and fans for an extraordinary season on social media. I am grateful for your warmth and for fostering a sense of belonging in me.
“I relished every moment, working in tandem with my teammates and club.” It was a delight to perform for you, but the conclusion was bittersweet. I extend my best wishes to you.
Naturally, there is still a considerable distance to cover in the transfer window; however, these remarks do not accurately reflect an individual who was initially amenable to contemplating a return. In reality, Getafe is unable to contend financially with the interested clubs.
The academy graduate’s fee will be considered “pure” profit, as it cost the club nothing to bring him in, which will help stabilize United’s fragile stance within Premier League spending regulations. Greenwood’s departure will aid in this regard.
It is believed that United are operating on a net spend budget of only £50m this summer. Consequently, such transactions would be necessary for them to secure all of the desired targets.
Greenwood may still be able to play at Old Trafford if he decides to join a Europa League team that United may encounter in the competition.
