Irish association football referee Dermot Gallagher delivers his honest verdict over the three-point denial when Dango Ouatarra’s goal was disallowed during the Bournemouth vs. Newcastle United draw match

The referee, Dermot Gallagher, said he didn’t understand why Bournemouth’s late winner against Newcastle United on Sunday was thrown out by VAR.

Chelsea thought they had won all three games when Dango Ouatarra scored from a corner kick in extra time. But VAR threw out the goal because they saw that the ball hit the Bournemouth player on the arm instead of his shoulder or head before it went past Nick Pope in the Newcastle goal.

The technology looked at the goal for a long time before telling David Coote to change his mind without checking with a monitor on the field. The referee didn’t have to look at a monitor to make factual choices about handball because of the current rules.

As a result of his response to the goal that was called off, Andoni Iraola was given a yellow card. A few minutes later, one of his coaches was also sent off for pulling down Neto to stop Bournemouth from counterattacking. Both events caused a lot of debate, and Gallagher has said what he thinks about both the goal that was called off and the possible red card for the Brazilian. The following is what he said on Ref Watch:

“Look around; everyone is happy with the goal; everyone wants a goal.” To be honest, I never thought it would be changed when I saw it go to VAR and they said they were checking for handball.

“The VAR said it was a factual decision. I think it’s contradictory that it’s a factual decision that has become subjective because the VAR thought it was low enough on the arm to give handball.” The level of the game was high enough that I didn’t give a pass. I think there will be more people in my camp than in VAR’s.

“That was one of those calls where he [the VAR] thought it was too low on the sleeve.” I believe a lot of people will disagree.

When asked if the referee should have been sent to the monitor to check the call, Gallagher said, “It is a factual decision because the VAR has decided that it has hit the part of the arm, so in his eyes that’s a factual decision.”

“Only David Coote will know what he would have done if he had been sent to the screen. However, if I were the referee and I were sent to the screen, I would call a goal. This shows the problem: what was once a factual choice has become subjective, and I see no proof that it is handball.

“I don’t think this is in any way a red card.” He thinks that the most important thing is to keep the goalie from getting rid of the ball so that they can counter. It looks worse on TV because the goalie is moving, but he only grabs him around the chest. He doesn’t even touch him in the face or throat.
