“It is beyond belief.” Chris Sutton is perplexed by the practices of Premiership clubs prior to their matches against Celtic.
Chris Sutton is of the opinion that Scottish Premiership clubs are committing own goals against Celtic prior to the ball being released. Last weekend, the Hoops secured their fourth consecutive Premiership title by defeating Dundee United 5-0 at Tannadice.
The 11 other top-flight clubs appear to have no answers in stopping Brendan Rodgers’ machine, as the champions are Scotland’s unstoppable force. Sutton is perplexed by the quality of the Tannadice field in comparison to Celtic. Sutton was joined by Kris Boyd, Steven Naismith, and presenter Gordon Duncan on The Warm-Up podcast in anticipation of Rangers vs Celtic this Sunday.
Sutton was initially inquired by Naismith as to whether Celtic’s competitive spirit and drive to win matches have returned following a period of poor performance. Premiership Dundee United Saturday, April 26th 0|5 Celtic Premiership Celtic Saturday,
April 12th 5|1 Kilmarnock Premiership St Johnstone Sunday, April 6th 1|0 Celtic Premiership Celtic Saturday, March 29th 3|0 Midlothian’s Heart Premiership Celtic Sunday, March 16th 2|3 Rangers Premiership St Mirren Saturday, March 1st 2|5 Celtic Tuesday, February 25th Premiership Celtic 5|1 Aberdeen Premiership Hibernian Saturday, February 22nd 2|1 Celtic Despite a shaky start against United,
Celtic eventually found their footing, particularly in the second half, and easily defeated Jim Goodwin’s team. Additionally, Sutton has suggested that Celtic’s exceptional performance last weekend may have been influenced by the condition of the Tannadice pitch.
The ex-Celtic man responded by discussing the St Johnstone loss at McDiarmid Park, but he was diverted by the subpar condition of the pitch in Perth. He then expressed his confusion as to why United was able to provide a pitch of such high quality in time for their match against Celtic last weekend.
He suggested that a superior surface would be more conducive to the Hoops’ play. Sutton: “I am uncertain as to why Scottish clubs maintain such exceptional playing surfaces when they engage in matches against Celtic and Rangers.” I mean, Dundee United’s performance at the weekend is truly remarkable! Particularly Celtic, they are exceptional performers. Boyd:
“Would you prefer that they all engage in play on cow fields?” Sutton: “Yes, just like the good, old Motherwell days.” Engage in sand play. Duncan: “It has been converted into a bowling green.” Sutton: “Indeed, it is! That is the fundamental objective. Celtic’s elimination was undoubtedly influenced by the pitch’s quality, as they were unable to execute crisp passes on the bobbly and muddy surface.
The synthetic surface of Kilmarnock’s Rugby Park can be quite unpleasant to play on due to the additional movement of the ball on the plastic grass. Ross County’s Dingwall pitch was not the best during the winter, but the Hoops were able to surmount this and secure a 4-1 victory on January 11.
This season, Celtic has maintained a respectable away record in the top-flight, although it has not been entirely flawless. They have suffered three losses on the road and have drawn twice. Therefore, they have secured 12 victories from 17 matches. They will be striving to increase this total to 13 from 18 when they visit Ibrox to face Rangers on Sunday.
