Rangers could soon face a significant dilemma in the goalkeeping department as uncertainty grows around the futures of their current options.
The Ibrox club currently have three senior goalkeepers in the first-team setup — Jack Butland, Liam Kelly, and Kieran Wright — but there is a growing possibility that all three may not remain at the club for long.
Butland has firmly established himself as the number one under manager Danny Rohl, making 29 appearances since the German coach took charge. However, the experienced goalkeeper recently revealed that he has not yet entered formal discussions with the club about extending his contract.
Butland open to staying at Ibrox
Speaking ahead of Rangers’ upcoming Scottish Premiership fixture against St Mirren, Butland admitted he would be happy to remain with the club beyond next summer, though negotiations have yet to begin.
He explained that while there have been informal mentions of a possible extension, nothing concrete has been discussed so far. The goalkeeper also indicated that while he is eager to stay, contract talks are not something he intends to push himself.
Why Rangers could face a goalkeeping issue
Although Butland’s current deal runs until 2027, the situation could become complicated if an extension is not agreed before January of that year. At that stage, he would be free to sign a pre-contract agreement with another club.
Meanwhile, the contracts of both Kelly and Wright are due to expire this summer. Unless new deals are reached, the pair could leave the club at the end of the season, potentially leaving Rangers with just one senior goalkeeper in the squad.
Given Butland’s status as the clear first-choice keeper, many believe Rangers should move quickly to secure his long-term future and avoid any uncertainty in the position.
Squad planning concerns
If Rangers fail to retain at least two of their current goalkeepers, the club could find themselves facing a serious shortage in the position. While bringing in new signings remains an option, there are several other areas of the squad that may require strengthening.
In recent years, squad planning at Ibrox has often been questioned, and Rohl will be hoping to bring greater stability as he works to rebuild a team capable of returning Rangers to the top of Scottish football. ⚽
