Rangers are preparing for a busy January transfer window and are willing to listen to offers for several first-team players, including Joe Rothwell, Rabbi Matondo and Kieran Dowell, with Clinton Nsiala also a possible departure.
Rothwell has fallen sharply out of favour since Danny Rohl took charge at Ibrox, managing just 83 minutes of action under the new boss. Recent reports have linked the midfielder with a return to England, with Sheffield United and Derby County both showing interest.
Matondo and Dowell have failed to feature and are now considered surplus to requirements, with Rangers unlikely to stand in the way of exits should suitable bids arrive. According to the Rangers Review, the club are open to selling Rothwell only six months after signing him, and believe they can recoup the £3.5million paid in the summer.
Rangers are not under pressure to sell in order to fund new arrivals, but trimming an inflated squad is viewed as sensible business as Rohl reshapes the group to suit his plans.
The club are actively targeting a new holding midfielder and have been linked with Tromsø’s Jens Hjerto-Dahl. Nsiala could also move on if he fails to break into Rohl’s thinking in the coming weeks.
In terms of recruitment, Rangers are expected to bring in three or four new faces during the window, with centre-back, left-back, midfield and wide positions all identified as priority areas.
