Jason Cundy pushes for rule change after ‘utter humiliation’ of a decision in Crystal Palace vs. Manchester City
Jason Cundy advocates for a modification of the rules following what he deems a “absolute disgrace” regarding a decision made during the match between Crystal Palace and Manchester City.
Manchester City was only able to secure a 2-2 stalemate against Crystal Palace in the Premier League, a result that is regarded as disappointing.
Manchester City had the opportunity to reduce the deficit between themselves and Liverpool to six points, following the postponement of the Reds’ match against Everton.
However, Manchester City fell short against Crystal Palace, a team that has historically posed significant challenges for Pep Guardiola in previous encounters.
The team had to recover from a deficit on two occasions to secure a point, and ultimately, this outcome was likely a just reflection of the match.
A pivotal incident occurred during the match when Rico Lewis received a second yellow card, resulting in his dismissal from the game while playing for Manchester City.
The decision has generated considerable controversy, and commentator Jason Cundy has unequivocally criticized it.
Subsequent to yesterday’s match, Pep Guardiola articulated his grievances regarding the decision to issue a red card to Lewis during the encounter against Crystal Palace.
Lewis received a single caution for dissent from referee Rob Jones following a foul committed by Kevin De Bruyne. In the 84th minute, Lewis received a second yellow card for a late challenge on Trevoh Chalobah.
However, the replays indicated that Lewis’ foot was firmly positioned on the ground, after which Chalobah’s foot subsequently made contact with Lewis.
The decision may not have significantly influenced the outcome of the game, given the timing of its occurrence.
A yellow card that subsequently results in a red card should invariably be subject to review by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR), as it pertains to a decision that will significantly influence the outcome of the match.
It is imperative that the legislation be amended to mandate the utilization of VAR for the review of second yellow card decisions.
The city must now contend with United in the absence of Lewis, who has been one of Guardiola’s more effective players this season, due to a regulation that is rather unreasonable.
