Manchester City. In the summer of 2023, City spent £77 million to acquire the defender from RB Leipzig. The Croatian player participated in 42 games across all competitions during his inaugural season at the Etihad Stadium, contributing five goals and three assists. The defender was instrumental in Pep Guardiola’s team achieving the unprecedented feat of winning four consecutive league trophies, having appeared in 28 Premier League matches. Subsequently, Peter Schmeichel designated Gvardiol as the most exceptional Premier League acquisition of the 2023/24 season. The 22-year-old, who is currently in the second season with the Blues, has disclosed which two members of the City squad he has developed a particularly strong relationship with.
Josko Gvardiol identifies two of his closest friends at Manchester City. In an interview that was published on the official Man City website, Gvardiol disclosed the extent of the team’s camaraderie and the players with whom he has the closest relationship. He stated, “I do experience that sense of belonging to a city family.” We spend a significant amount of time together, and I reside independently. I require the company of this group, and they contribute to my personal growth on a daily basis. “Kova is also a close friend of mine.” We are exceedingly tight. “As I have previously stated, he is a genuinely kind individual, and I am delighted to have the opportunity to share a dressing room with him in Manchester and with the national team.” He provided me with significant assistance in the initial stages and we spent a significant amount of time together. Matheus [Nunes] as well. I must acknowledge Matheus, as he is a humorous and truly kind individual. I genuinely enjoy spending time with him. Kovacic encouraged Gvardiol to enhance his performance at City. Kovacic recently expressed his confidence in Gvardiol’s ability to develop as a player at City, despite the fact that they have only spent one complete season together at the Manchester club. He stated, “Josko is undoubtedly a remarkable player with a strong character who is eager to develop. I believe that there is no superior club than City, and I am confident that he will continue to excel for both the club and our national team.” This could also be the reason why Nunes is particularly close to these two players, as he also joined the Blues during the same transfer window as Gvardiol and Kovacic.
Guardiola suggested that he has not been providing Nunes with the game time he merits after witnessing the Portuguese international score a goal and provide two assists in City’s 5-0 Champions League victory over Sparta Prague. Gvardiol’s assertion that the entire squad has a tight connection should be encouraging to City supporters from a broader perspective, as it is likely to have played a significant role in the club’s recent success.
