The Montreal Canadiens have a strong interest in the talented defenseman Gustav Lindstrom, but he has just surprised the National Hockey League by signing a large new contract outside of the country.
Gustav Lindstrom, a young defenseman, was acquired by the Montreal Canadiens in the 2023–2024 season. After he had the opportunity to play for the team for 14 games and score three goals, the expectations for the former second-round choice of the Detroit Red Wings were quite high.
Last year, however, he was forced to spend the entire year in Laval because of the success of players like Lane Hutson at the National Hockey League level. He finished the year with a respectable four goals and eleven points in 42 games, which was a significant drop from his prior performances.
Now, at the age of 26, he has made a decision that is rather stunning. On Thursday, Djurgården, a team in the Swedish Hockey League, made the announcement that he has signed a big five-year deal with the team, which will take effect immediately.
After playing in 174 games in the National Hockey League over the course of the past six years, it is easy to understand why teams believe Lindstrom may have hit his full potential at the highest level. During that time, he scored only five goals and 35 points, and he did not perform at the level of a superstar in the American Hockey League.
However, despite the fact that he is 26 years old, there is still a great deal of time for him to return to Sweden in order to make things right and possibly force his way back into the National Hockey League. However, the fact that the skilled defenseman signed a five-year agreement indicates that he may not be interested in doing otherwise.
However, in the end, Lindstrom has demonstrated a great deal of talent during his time in North America; however, he has simply been unable to put it together in a consistent manner. At this point, we will wait and see what he accomplishes in Sweden before considering the possibility of him returning.
