Kieran Tierney has revealed that Celtic teammate Kasper Schmeichel reached out to him after Scotland dramatically sealed automatic World Cup qualification at Denmark’s expense. The Danish goalkeeper contacted the Arsenal defender soon after Steve Clarke’s side snatched top spot in the group thanks to sensational stoppage-time strikes from Tierney and Kenny McLean.
While the Tartan Army continue to buzz after an unforgettable night at Hampden, players are now filtering back to their clubs for the weekend fixtures. Tierney — who bent a brilliant effort beyond Schmeichel to put Scotland ahead — is set to reunite with the veteran keeper when Celtic take on St Mirren. Although the 39-year-old has not yet returned to training, he has already spoken with Tierney and fellow Scotland international Anthony Ralston.
“Within an hour he’d texted me and Ralston, which shows the level of professionalism he has,” Tierney said. “I said after the match, someone has to lose — and over the years it’s usually been Scotland in games like that.”
Asked by Sky Sports if he’d seen Schmeichel back at Lennoxtown, Tierney replied: “No, he’s in tomorrow, but he sent me a lovely message after the game. For us, the big moments went our way and it was incredible. But of course, I feel for Kasper and his team.”
It has been a whirlwind few days for Tierney, who was even mentioned in the House of Commons by Prime Minister Keir Starmer after ending Scotland’s 28-year wait to return to the World Cup stage.
A still-surprised Tierney added: “I saw that. It just shows you how far the impact goes — it reaches everywhere.”
