Kris Boyd weighs in on Rangers transfers as Cavenagh and 49ers address past mistakes

Rangers still have time to add more reinforcements before the January transfer window closes, with the deadline falling on Monday, February 2.

The club appointed Danny Rohl as head coach earlier this season following his departure from Sheffield Wednesday.

He replaced Russell Martin at Ibrox and has already begun to make a positive impact. Rangers cruised into the next round of the Scottish Cup with a 5-0 win over Annan Athletic, where Bojan Miovski scored a hat-trick, while Kieran Dowelland Thelo Aasgaard also found the net.

Former striker Kris Boyd believes Rangers are not finished in the transfer market and expects chairman Andrew Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises to continue backing Rohl. The club have already strengthened with the arrivals of Andreas Skov Olsen, Tochi Chukwuani, and Tuur Rommens.

Writing in his Scottish Sun column, Boyd said the quality of a club’s January business could be decisive in the title race.

He credited Cavenagh and the American ownership group for giving Rangers a genuine chance to compete, while admitting mistakes were made in the summer — both in managerial appointment and recruitment.

Boyd added that Rohl had made it clear further quality was required, particularly at the top end of the market. Rangers have already committed £7.5 million on Chukwuani and Rommens, while the loan signing of Skov Olsen from Wolfsburg was described as a major statement.

The Danish winger, who is 26 and capped 40 times, is expected to bring creativity and spark to the attack. Boyd also suggested that Rangers may offload fringe players before the deadline but could still make further additions, with Cavenagh focused on chasing the Premiership title and the potential reward of direct Champions League qualification.

Rangers return to league action next Sunday against Dundee, following their Europa League fixture with Ludogorets, as they look to maintain momentum in the title race. They currently sit six points behind leaders Hearts, level on points with Celtic but trailing on goal difference.

Attention will also be on how Skov Olsen adapts to Scottish football.

The winger began his career at FC Nordsjælland, before spells with Bologna and Club Brugge, and has since made 24 appearances for Wolfsburg, scoring three goals. His arrival gives Rohl added depth and competition in attacking areas as Rangers push on in the second half of the season.
