Kyogo Furuhashi fires out 18-word statement after Celtic exit talk and headline-grabbing Birmingham City moment

The former Celtic forward has been linked with a potential Birmingham City exit during the current transfer window.

Kyogo Furuhashi has delivered an 18-word message after speculation about a Celtic return was followed by a memorable moment in a Birmingham City shirt.

The Japanese striker departed Celtic in January 2025 following a prolific spell in Glasgow before a difficult stint with Rennes. He joined Birmingham City on a permanent deal last summer, but his time at St Andrew’s has been challenging, with no Championship goals prior to this week under manager Chris Davies — who previously worked under Brendan Rodgers at Celtic.

Talk of a possible Hoops comeback gathered pace earlier in the week, although Celtic boss Martin O’Neill played down the idea ahead of the 4-0 Premiership win over Dundee United. While Celtic cruised past the Tangerines, Kyogo enjoyed a timely highlight of his own, scoring in Birmingham’s dramatic 3-2 FA Cup victory over Cambridge United.

Kyogo reacts after Birmingham breakthrough amid Celtic speculation

Kyogo struck just before half-time, capitalising on a defensive error before calmly slotting the ball into the bottom corner. After opening his Birmingham account, he addressed supporters on social media, signalling his determination to push on during the second half of the campaign.

“Hi Blues fans. I’m glad that I scored. I’ll keep trying to help the team. Keep right on,” Kyogo said.

Chris Davies was quick to praise the striker’s impact after the match, highlighting Kyogo’s work rate and composure in front of goal.

“He was really good tonight,” Davies said. “The second goal is all about Kyogo. He chased a lost cause, nicked the ball and finished it really well. You could see what it meant to everyone — the players, the fans, the staff. It meant a lot to him.

“For Kyogo, it’s about goals and confidence. He works incredibly hard, he’s quick and he always gets chances. Hopefully this helps him take those chances more regularly. He has our full backing.”

Celtic unlikely to pursue Kyogo return

O’Neill addressed Kyogo’s future prior to the weekend, suggesting a return to Parkhead is improbable at this stage.

“I would say that’s probably unlikely,” O’Neill said. “There’s a feeling that he wants to prove himself at Birmingham, which is understandable. We’re working hard to strengthen the squad, but there’s a lot going on behind the scenes.”

Celtic responded strongly to recent turbulence with a convincing victory over Dundee United, courtesy of goals from Yang, Arne Engels, Benjamin Nygren and Daizen Maeda. The Hoops now turn their attention to an upcoming clash with Falkirk.
