Celtic’s need for a reliable striker has become increasingly obvious, with speculation before Christmas linking Kyogo Furuhashi with a return to Parkhead.
Despite those rumours, Celtic appear to be focusing elsewhere in the January window, with winger Jocelin Ta Bi emerging as Wilfried Nancy’s next likely addition. That decision raised eyebrows after the defeat to Rangers, where the Hoops squandered several first-half chances. Johnny Kenny and Shin Yamada both failed to convert, underlining Celtic’s lack of cutting edge.
While talk of Kyogo’s return continues, his current salary at Birmingham City may rule out any realistic reunion. According to Capology, the Japanese forward is the Championship club’s highest earner after signing a three-year deal, taking home £35,000 per week — £5,000 more than Demarai Gray.
Kyogo earns more than double the wages of compatriot Kanya Fujimoto and almost three times as much as last season’s leading scorer Jay Stansfield. However, with just one goal to his name, he has yet to justify that outlay.
Given those figures, it is highly unlikely Celtic would match his current wage. Kyogo’s form dipped significantly before leaving Glasgow and has not recovered since. Unless a loan move with a significant wage reduction became possible, a return to Celtic looks improbable.
