Ferencváros vs Rangers: Postponement Latest as Fresh Weather Warning Hits Budapest
Rangers are set to resume their Europa League campaign on Thursday night when they travel to face Ferencváros – but their preparations come amid new weather concerns in Hungary.
Danny Röhl’s side head into the match with their European hopes already hanging by a thread after what has been an uncharacteristically poor continental run. A 1–1 draw with Braga last time out did little to soften the sting of earlier defeats to Genk, SK Brann and Roma, leaving this year’s tournament one to forget for the Ibrox men.
Rangers will make the trip to the Hungarian capital for the 11 December showdown knowing that only a win will keep even the faintest hope alive.
Weather Warning Issued in Budapest
Ferencváros play their home fixtures at the Groupama Aréna in Budapest’s south-east district. While many travelling supporters may have been expecting a festive European away day, the Hungarian Meteorological Service has now issued a yellow fog warning for the city.
The alert begins late on Tuesday and continues through Wednesday. Although the weather warning is forecast to expire before Rangers arrive, there is still some concern that dense fog could disrupt flights – potentially causing issues for travelling fans if airport schedules are affected.
At this stage, however, no postponement of the match is expected, and UEFA remains confident the game will go ahead as planned.
How Both Clubs Stand in Europe
Celtic’s early struggles under Wilfried Nancy have only sharpened interest in how Rangers perform abroad, and Ferencváros boss Robbie Keane – a familiar face to supporters in Glasgow – will be keen to pile on the pressure.
Ferencváros, Hungarian champions for seven straight seasons, have opened their European campaign strongly and currently sit sixth in the coefficient table, just one point behind leaders Lyon. Rangers, by contrast, remain in 33rd and trail Basel by five points for the final play-off berth.
Realistically, progression to the knockout stages looks out of reach for the Ibrox side this year. Still, securing a win in Budapest would at least help them avoid the embarrassment of finishing the group stage without a single victory.
Fog, Pressure and Uncertainty
With Budapest braced for thick fog and possibly more severe conditions, the build-up to Thursday’s match has taken an unpredictable turn. While officials expect the fixture to proceed, the weather adds yet another layer of uncertainty to a European campaign that has already been turbulent for Rangers.
