The Argentine sensation was recently announced as the recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom from the President of the United States, Joe Biden.

 

 

 

The distinction is presented to “individuals who have made exemplary contributions to the prosperity, values, or security of the United States, world peace, or other significant societal, public or private endeavors”

 

 

 

.Messi was one of 19 individuals to receive the honor this year, and he is widely regarded as the greatest footballer of all time. A medal was also awarded to Hollywood luminaries Michael J. Fox and Denzel Washington, NBA icon Earvin ‘Magic’ Johnson, and former Presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.

 

 

 

The former Barcelona icon was absent during the ceremony at the White House on Saturday, January 4, when Biden presented the medals, despite receiving the extraordinary honor. Messi has since issued a statement regarding his honor and the fact that he would not be present to receive it in person from the President at the White House.

 

 

It is an immense honor to receive any type of medal from the President of the United States. Although Messi was unable to attend the ceremony, he wanted to ensure that he acknowledged the award.

 

 

 

According to Fabrizio Romano, the Argentina legend wrote a letter to the White House informing them that he was unable to attend due to a prior commitment. However, he acknowledged that he would be interested in receiving the honor in person upon his return to the United States.

 

 

Messi relocated to Inter Miami during the summer of 2023 and has since dramatically altered the landscape of American football. He has contributed 52 goals to the Florida-based franchise in 39 outings.

 

 

 

Upon his arrival in Miami, the club was the last in the MLS Eastern Conference; however, he promptly transformed them into major contenders. He has already guided them to their first two pieces of silverware, and this season, they finished first in the table.

 

 

Biden has acknowledged the significant impact of his arrival at the David Beckham-owned club, and as a consequence, he has proposed that he be awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
