Scotland captain Andy Robertson has been cautioned that a switch to Celtic may not be well-timed, as he approaches a major decision point in his Liverpool career.
From January 1, the defender will be allowed to negotiate a pre-contract with clubs outside England as he considers whether to leave Anfield on a free transfer in the summer.
Robertson attracted strong interest from Atletico Madrid last year after Liverpool signed Milos Kerkez for £40 million from Bournemouth, but that move never materialised. Now 31, he has slipped down Arne Slot’s pecking order yet chose to remain on Merseyside this season and fight for his place.
With Robertson set to captain Scotland at their first World Cup in 28 years next summer, rumours have intensified that he may look for more regular playing time before the tournament.
Having previously spoken about wanting to return to Celtic while still able to make a real impact, his name has resurfaced in connection with a dramatic return to the club where he began his youth career.
However, former Celtic defender Kelvin Wilson believes joining the Hoops now wouldn’t be ideal, particularly since Kieran Tierney already returned to the club last summer. Speaking at the Scottish Masters event in Aberdeen, Wilson said:
“He’s a proven winner with huge experience. They’ve already brought Tierney back, so adding another left-back would still add quality—but I’m not sure the timing works for what Celtic want moving forward. Robertson has been world-class, but he’s reaching the latter stages of his career.”
Meanwhile, ex-Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy warned that losing Robertson would be a major blow for the Reds, describing him as one of the best left-backs in the club’s history.
He told talkSPORT that Robertson’s consistency, longevity and role in a highly successful era at Liverpool place him among the club’s greats.
