John Aldridge, a former player for Liverpool, criticized Declan Rice and Jack Grealish for choosing to play for England even though they had previously played for the Republic of Ireland.

John Aldridge, a former player for Liverpool, hates that Declan Rice and Jack Grealish switched their national teams.

Rice played for the Republic of Ireland three times as an adult before choosing to play for England. Grealish also played for Ireland as a youth before making the same choice. Both of them were booed when they scored in England’s 2-0 win over Ireland on Saturday in Dublin.

Along with Rice and Grealish, Aldridge was born in England but chose to play for Ireland instead of England because of his family history. The striker for Liverpool also thinks that Rice and Grealish’s choice to ignore Ireland is “not right on so many levels.”

Aldridge wrote in his Sunday World piece, “It was bad enough seeing England play around with Ireland at the Aviva Stadium yesterday without seeing Declan Rice and Jack Grealish score their two goals.”

“It’s old news now, but what those two guys did to Ireland was wrong in so many ways. Wearing a green jersey is an honor, and they treated us all with a terrible lack of respect.” Because I was born in England, I’m in a great situation to talk about this. When I was younger, I could have tried to get into their team.

“But when Jack Charlton asked me to play for Ireland, I jumped at the chance because it had always been my dream to wear the green shirt.” You can’t play for England a few months after getting your first Ireland cap and kissing that badge, like Rice did.

“Greash is a little different because he only played for Ireland when he was younger, but I still think you shouldn’t be able to switch international teams.” We thought about what could have been when we saw those two score for England. Ireland could have built their team around them for the last few years.

She told ITV, “Yeah, I think it was what me and Dec expected” when asked about how they were treated in Dublin. Dec and I both had a good time playing here. I sure did. There’s no bad blood on my side because I have a lot of Irish cousins.

On the other hand, Rice said, “It was a great afternoon.” It was clear that the manager’s first game and the team won. We know how important it is to win this group because we’re not where we want to be in the Nations League. “I think it was really important to come here today and win, and scoring with Jack was pretty cool too.”
