Arsenal ‘intervened’ to halt a £51m transfer, and Liverpool’s response speaks volumes. The unsuccessful transfer of Martin Zubimendi to Liverpool last summer has been the subject of new information regarding Arsenal’s involvement.
Real Sociedad is attempting to postpone the formal signing of Zubimendi for accounting purposes, as the Gunners are expected to declare the signing of the player early next month. Rather than whether
will attract the attention of Europe’s major hitters, it has long been a matter of which club Zubimendi chooses to sign for, as he is one of the standout defensive midfielders on the continent and has an affordable £51million release clause written into his Sociedad contract. Twelve months ago, Liverpool was on the brink of signing him, as he had ‘everything agreed’ to transfer to Anfield.
However, the 26-year-old ultimately opted out at the eleventh hour. Nevertheless, Liverpool’s response should serve as a source of optimism for their supporters. Despite allocating a substantial sum of money for Zubimendi, they have yet to acquire a defensive midfielder, despite the passage of an entire year.
Part of this is attributable to the extraordinary partnership between Ryan Gravenberch and Alexis Mac Allister in Arne Slot’s double pivot. However, Liverpool’s transfer philosophy is also becoming more established, sensible, and well-considered. In essence, the Reds are resolute in their refusal to accept anything less than the best.
It would have been effortless for senior executives at Anfield to authorize a transfer spree last summer, as many believed that Slot would need assistance after succeeding the legendary Jurgen Klopp. However, they were able to avoid making a single first-team signing during the entire window, as Federico Chiesa featured minimally and Giorgi Mamardashvili was returned to Valencia.
Liverpool secured the Premier League title by placing their trust in their current squad. This summer, they have successfully acquired two of their top-tier targets, Florian Wirtz and Jeremie Frimpong, and they are on track to acquire a third, Milos Kerkez.
