Former Sunderland captain Dan Neil has sealed a loan move to Ipswich Town, with the deal set to become permanent in the summer. The 24-year-old midfielder, who led the Black Cats to promotion via the play-offs last season, has slipped down the pecking order following heavy January recruitment under Régis Le Bris.
With Ipswich currently third in the Championship, Neil joins another promotion push. Rangers had shown interest in the midfielder, alongside Romaine Mundle, but neither switch materialised. Instead, the Ibrox side bolstered their midfield by signing Tochi Chukwuani from Sturm Graz.
Neil explained that Ipswich’s playing style under Kieran McKenna suited him perfectly, aligning with how he likes to control games from midfield while contributing defensively. McKenna praised Neil’s versatility, experience and leadership qualities.
Sunderland paid tribute to their academy product, thanking him for his 18 years of service, while sporting director Kristjaan Speakman highlighted his leadership in guiding the club back to the Premier League.
With Neil no longer an option, Rangers may now turn their attention to Tromsø youngster Jens Hjerto-Dahl, who remains on their radar.
