There have been no internal discussions at Birmingham City regarding the potential replacement of head coach Chris Davies.
Senior figures at the club have not debated the manager’s position and continue to back the 40-year-old, with chairman Tom Wagner still fully supportive of the man tasked with guiding the Blues back to the Championship from League One.
That said, the club’s leadership is aware of recent struggles. Birmingham have slid from a position just outside the play-off places down to 17th after enduring a seven-match winless run. The downturn has come at an awkward moment, coinciding with the opening of the January transfer window, a period expected to bring notable squad changes.
Birmingham Prepare for Major January Business
Director of football Craig Gardner is targeting as many as four new signings this month, while also looking to move on a similar number of players to free up both squad space and budget.
One arrival has already been confirmed, with Kai Wagner joining from MLS side Philadelphia Union in a deal believed to be worth around £2 million. The left-back provides cover for Alex Cochrane, who has recently returned from injury and featured in the 3-0 defeat to Watford.
Further additions, however, are likely to depend on departures, and plenty of movement is anticipated at St Andrew’s over the coming weeks.
Despite recent form, Birmingham’s home record remains a major positive. Under Davies, the Blues have been formidable on their own ground, with Hull City the only team to have taken maximum points in 37 league home fixtures. That run includes an entire season unbeaten in front of their own supporters.
A derby victory against Coventry City tomorrow could prove crucial in easing the growing pressure and restoring momentum at a key stage of the campaign.
