This weekend marked the resumption of Premier League football following the conclusion of the 2024 international window, and it was not without its share of VAR drama.

On Sunday evening, Manchester United completed a 1-1 draw at Ipswich Town in Ruben Amorim’s inaugural match as manager of the club.

Marcus Rashford scored the opening goal within the first few minutes; however, Omari Hutchinson scored an exceptional goal just before halftime.

The Premier League Match Centre was compelled to issue a statement prior to the break, verifying that the technology had been disabled for an unforeseen reason, despite the absence of any significant controversial referee or VAR decisions during the game.

Anthony Taylor summoned the two commanders to inform them that VAR was not operational as a result of a fire alarm at Stockley Park.

A second statement was disseminated by the Premier League prior to the commencement of the second half at Portman Road, which verified that VAR was operational once again following the incident.

The technology was utilized for the entire second 45 minutes, but neither team was able to secure a much-needed victory.

After 12 games, United is currently ranked 12th in the league standings, 15 points behind the leaders Liverpool. Currently, they are seven points behind Manchester City and six points behind Arsenal.

When they face Norwegian side FK Bodo/Glimt in the Europa League midweek, Amorim will be optimistic that his team can secure their first victory of his tenure. In the league, they will be hosting Everton at Old Trafford next weekend.
