Stefan Ortega has signed with Manchester City for another two years, but it is now clearer what will happen with his partner.
After extending goalkeeper Stefan Ortega’s deal, Manchester City has made their team stronger for next season.
Because first-choice Ederson has been hurt a lot this season, the German goalkeeper has been called on more than any other. Ortega’s star showing came in the important win over Tottenham Hotspur in the second-to-last game of the season.
He came on in the second half after Ederson left with a broken eye socket and played great, culminating in a huge save that kept Heung-Min Son from scoring, as City won 2-0. So it wasn’t a surprise that the Blues wanted to keep him until 2026.
But what Txiki Begiristain, the head of football, said gives us a very good idea of what will happen with Ortega’s teammate. “This is a crucial contract extension for Manchester City,” he told us.
“Stephan is the best second goalkeeper we’ve ever had. He gives us quality, stability, and experience.” Every time I talk to our goalkeeping coach Xabi Mancisidor, I hear how great Stefan is as a player.
“He is very skilled, and it’s clear that he has made a big difference in our success since he got here.” He should have a great summer and be ready for the 2024–25 season when he comes back.
Because Begiristain insisted that Ortega was City’s No. 2, it looks like Ederson will stay at the Etihad Stadium and be the No. 1 next season. The 31-year-old goalie wants to be better than the Brazilian, just like every other goalkeeper.
But it looks like City still sees him as a good cup keeper who works well with Ederson. Recently, City’s number one player has been linked with a move to Saudi Arabia. Now that Ortega has signed a new deal, there will be rumors that Ederson might be leaving the club.
Ortega is a good goalkeeper, but City doesn’t seem ready to let Ederson go just yet. They will try to keep their reserve goalkeeper for as long as possible.
