Since he didn’t play at all in Sunday’s 4-3 win over Real Madrid in the El Clasico, Rodrygo Goes’ future with the club looks less certain.
The Brazilian international didn’t play when Real Madrid lost to Hansi Flick’s team in the Copa del Rey final not long ago.
Rodrygo is going to be sold by Real Madrid, which is good news for Manchester City because they have wanted to sign him for a long time.
In August, Rodrygo was also in talks to join Manchester City, but he chose to stay in Madrid.
Rodrygo’s work for the current European winners would make him an obvious choice for most fans to sign, but Manchester City fans aren’t sure what they think about a possible move.
Different Man City fans were split on the chance to sign Rodrygo.
A Manchester City fan thought it was strange that many other fans were against the idea of signing Rodrygo this summer: “Really, people don’t want Rodrygo to come to City?” He is 24 years old. In the Champions League, he tore us apart. He keeps winning, which is a way of thinking we need to keep. He has what it takes to be world-class or is already that. More than our existing choices as well.
The two-time Champions League winner’s arrival was seen as a must by another City fan: “We need a proven winger who will add goals and assists and take the pressure off [Erling] Haaland.” He’s scored 14 or more goals in each of the last three seasons. [Jeremy] Doku, Savio, and Oscar Bobb have never even come close to that many. There’s no reason for us to depend on wingers who haven’t shown they can play at the top level yet. We need quality and depth out wide, so it doesn’t matter if we have to spend another £100 million.
A third Manchester City fan said he would sign Rodrygo because the Sky Blues don’t have enough goalscorers out wide: “I get that there are other key positions to solve before bringing in another wide forward… but I’d happily have Rodrygo at Manchester City if we wanted him.” Our wide players don’t score or set up enough goals. Rodrygo is very good at finishing games. He was going to bring that.
But some City fans think it would be a waste to sign the talented wide player. One fan said, “Good player, but if he was at any other club, he’d be seen as a decent option that’s worth £60 million.” What we’d have to pay because of all the fuss about Madrid is crazy. People think he’s the best in the world, but he’s not.
This fifth Manchester City fan just asked, “What do we need? The right signings.” What does Rodrygo bring to the team that Omar Marmoush or Doku don’t?
Finally, a sixth Manchester City fan said Rodrygo has become a worse player and that Pep Guardiola’s team needs to focus on other places before signing him: “And Rodrigo at City?” Pass with flying colors. Why would we pay more than €100 million (£84.4 million) for a left winger when we already have Doku and Marmoush? Not interested. It’s a shame that his Real form has dropped—he has only scored three goals in thirteen games this season. We don’t need to sign another flair player; we need a backup for Kevin De Bruyne or a right back. Pep [Guardiola] has to set priorities.
Surely, if the Real Madrid player did join City, people would have different thoughts about the deal until he started performing right away.
Things that Pep Guardiola has already done to get Rodrygo
But there’s no doubt that the 24-year-old is a great player.
But in the past, great players like Angel Di Maria and Andriy Shevchenko have failed in the Premier League because they were not a good fit for Manchester United or Chelsea, which is the most important thing when signing a player.
However, Rodrygo’s dad has met Pep Guardiola, and Manchester City fans might be shocked to learn that the club has made an offer for him.
