Imagine the frustration Manchester United must have experienced when they failed to secure a third consecutive Premier League title in 1998 by a single point, following their success in 1996 and 1997.

United’s secured four of the initial five Premier League titles, winning two consecutively before being defeated by Blackburn Rovers in the 1995 championship match.

United was defeated by the Lancashire team, which was under the leadership of Sir Kenny Dalglish at the time, by a mere point. In 1998, Arsenal bested United to secure the top spot, which was precisely the same situation.

Before Trinidad and Tobago international Dwight Yorke arrived from Aston Villa, Jaap Stam was the first statement acquisition of the summer, joining from PSV Eindhoven to fortify the defence.

Two days prior to their second Premier League match of the season, United acquired the striker in a transaction valued at over £12.5 million.

Prior to his relocation to Old Trafford, Yorke had already established himself as one of the most consistent goal scorers in the Premier League, having scored 46 goals in the three previous seasons.

In 1995/96 and 1996/97, he scored 17 goals each, and in 1997/98, he scored 12. In their attempt to reclaim the Premier League title, United, understandably, believed that Yorke was the missing link.

The 53-year-old promptly made an impact in Manchester, scoring twice on his home debut in a 4-1 victory over Charlton Athletic.

With 20 goals in 32 appearances, Yorke was once again their top scorer in the league. He was frequently dependable in front of the goal, as evidenced by his statistics.

Nevertheless, Ferguson, as Yorke has documented, was dissatisfied with the reality that the current Trinidad and Tobago manager permitted his overall performance to deteriorate.

Yorke, however, believed that he could have tallied an even greater number of goals than the 29 he did in his inaugural season in M16. “I should have scored more goals,” he continued.

“I was disappointed that I only scored 29 goals, despite the fact that this was an extraordinary number for my first year.”
