Manchester United coach Erik Ten Hag explain the main reason why he feels 27-years-old MUFC Midfielder Sofyan Amrabat should immediately be replaced with immediate effect
In the upcoming summer transfer window, Manchester United intends to boost its midfield options; nevertheless, it is possible that a single signing may not be sufficient.
The upcoming summer transfer window is going to be one of the most exciting in Manchester United’s recent history, regardless of what occurs between now and the conclusion of the season. This is going to be the case regardless of what happens.
In the wake of Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s entry on the scene, this summer will be the first time that the billionaire, who was born in Failsworth, will make an effort to rectify the wrongs that occurred in the past.
However, despite the fact that there is no ignoring the fact that United needs to enhance their proactiveness in the seller’s market, they also need to improve their hit rate when it comes to bringing players in. The summer before last, United made seven new acquisitions through the draft process, and only a very small fraction of those players have proven to be successful so far.
Sofyan Amrabat, who was drafted in on loan from Fiorentina on the day that the deadline was reached, was one of the few signings that received a warmer reception than the others from the summer of last year. United had spent a significant portion of the summer pursuing the Moroccan player, and they were able to finalize the deal only as the deadline was drawing near.
United sourced a player who they believed would give some much-needed competition for Casemiro at the base of the midfield. This man was recruited on loan for the length of the season and signed by United. The Brazilian had performed a great deal of labor during the 2022–2023 season, and United missed him terribly while he was unavailable. Manager Erik ten Hag had to find a way to “fit a square peg into a round hole” in order to compensate for his various absences.
The signing of Amrabat, who made a strong impression when playing for Morocco at the 2022 World Cup, provided Ten Hag with the assurance that he had a potential alternative inside his squad.
“In that position, we only had Casemiro, who can play really well there,” remarked Ten Hag, reflecting on the signing of Amrabat at the time. “He can play with a lot of skill there.” We are forced to make concessions while dealing with other people, but when it comes to Sofyan Amrabat, we have another option.
In addition to that, he is able to play alongside Casemiro because he is also capable of playing a little bit higher on the pitch. Therefore, it is very beneficial to have him, and I believe that he is a very excellent fit for the Premier League football as well as the Champions League game. “I believe that the demands are quite high.”
It goes without saying that Amrabat’s loan stint at Old Trafford has not been successful, as evidenced by the fact that he has only made 13 starts across all competitions. Despite the fact that United has the ability to make his temporary stay into a permanent one, the condition that allows them to do so will not be fulfilled.
United needs to find a long-term player who can fill the role of defensive midfielder in order to replace Casemiro before the start of the next season. This player should be able to play alongside Kobbie Mainoo, who is developing into a box-to-box midfielder, and provide Mainoo the opportunity to engage in his game. Nevertheless, in the event that United is able to find a replacement for Casemiro and simultaneously sell the Brazilian player, they will still be required to acquire a second defensive-midfielder in order to avoid falling short once more.
The challenge, of course, will be to find a player who is willing to accept a backup role and provide support, and who also proves to be a better fit than Amrabat, whose time spent at Old Trafford is not going to be remembered with fondness. He has not been able to make any kind of effect, and the fact that he was not included in the starting lineup when United played Liverpool in the FA Cup last month without Casemiro was illustrative of everything that has happened.
There has been a lot of speculation about Joao Neves joining Manchester United over the past few days. He has been mentioned as a possible candidate to take Casemiro’s place in the team’s roster. Simply signing him would not be sufficient for United, given that they are operating under the assumption that Casemiro will be moved. In order to fight for the defensive-midfield job, United requires two choices, as Ten Hag noted during the summer of 2017.
United’s financial situation will, of course, determine what they are able to accomplish and what they are not able to accomplish, but they must do everything in their power to guarantee that they have two players at each position who are capable of having a significant effect. Simply signing a replacement for Casemiro will not be sufficient sufficient.
