Manchester United coach Erik ten Hag sends out a message full of criticism over Manchester United’s role in the Brighton-winning goal scored by Joao Pedro
United lost their first Premier League game of the season to Brighton, who scored the game-winning goal in the 95th minute.
Joao Pedro scored the game-winning goal in Brighton’s win, and Erik ten Hag said that Manchester United will have to “talk about” it.
United’s first loss of the season came in the 95th minute when Pedro nodded the ball past Andre Onana. United lost three times in extra time in the Premier League last season.
Ten Hag wasn’t happy. The inswinging cross from Simon Adingra was not blocked by United. Full backs Diogo Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui let the winger cut inside.
Ten Hag said, “We didn’t stop the cross.” There were three players, and Adingra plays with his right foot. You should send him down the line and wide instead of letting him come in and let the cross happen.
“Of course we need to talk about this and how we should act as a team in that case.” That time, more than one mistake was made, which had a big effect on the score.
“That (giving in extra time) is really disappointing, yes.” We should be more clinical in these cases, read the game, and take the point if you can’t win any longer, because we give up just before time in the Community Shield. Our chances of winning this game were good, but don’t let us lose.
Ten Hag said, “I think we also often did the right things, that we often had success,” when it was said that United’s game management was a problem. When we win medals or other big games, for example, we get points. Today, we should do better than we did last time.
“On many occasions we have done very good in situations where we brought the score over the line and take the result.”
United was just inches away from going ahead 2-1, but Joshua Zirkzee was offside when Alejandro Garnacho’s tap-in went in. After sliding in to try to connect with Bruno Fernandes’s cross, Zirkzee tried to avoid getting hit by Garnacho’s shot.
“Of course, we can bring this goal back and go to explain this in detail and what should happen or what has happened,” said Ten Hag. “Having an overload is the most important thing, and we did a great job with it. The next step is to make the final pass, get the players in tight spots, and finish well, which we did.” According to what you say, it’s unfortunate.
United played very well in the first half, but they were behind 1-0 at halftime. Ten Hag was inspired by some parts of their play, even though they lost and in a bad way.
“Not only counter-attacking but build-up, possession, how we defend,” said he. I saw some good parts. There were parts of the game that were good, especially the second part. We should have more power over the game.
“But there were very good parts but we have to build up, be more clinal, and be more aggressive.”
