Martin Dubravka issues response to Newcastle United supporters after criticising Eddie Howe

Martin Dubravka sends heartfelt message to Newcastle fans after difficult St James’ Park return

Martin Dubravka’s return to St James’ Park did not unfold the way he hoped.

Now playing for Burnley, the former Newcastle United goalkeeper was back on Tyneside on Saturday but left empty-handed as the Magpies secured a 2–1 win. Dubravka faced an emotional afternoon, particularly after Bruno Guimarães scored directly from a corner—a moment the Slovakian international will not want to remember, with the goal catching him out at his near post.

Despite the setback, Dubravka applauded the home supporters during the game. He has since taken to social media to share photos from the match and deliver a message to Newcastle fans, writing:
“Thank you for nice reception.”

The warm welcome meant a lot to Dubravka, who gave several strong seasons to Newcastle but never truly had the chance to say goodbye. His departure from the club came after a turbulent spell linked to Eddie Howe’s goalkeeping decisions.

Dubravka frustrated by Howe’s choices

Dubravka’s final months at Newcastle were challenging.
He lost his starting position to Nick Pope, leading to a loan spell at Manchester United. When he returned, he stepped in during Pope’s injuries and played through parts of the 2023/24 and 2024/25 seasons, only to drop back to the bench once Pope recovered.

The 34-year-old revealed to The Times that last season he had been ready to move to Saudi side Al-Shabab, a move that would have offered financial security. But Howe convinced him to stay and sign a new contract.

Dubravka said:

“Everything was smooth and we signed the deal.
It was official on the Thursday, and then on the Saturday Eddie dropped me.
I didn’t expect that because I had just signed a new deal instead of one that would have completely secured my life in Saudi Arabia. I was shocked.”

He added that the conversation he had with Howe after that match was “not a nice conversation.”

Now settled at Burnley, Dubravka appears ready to move on, but made sure to acknowledge Newcastle fans who applauded him on his return. Their support clearly still means a great deal to him.
