Martin O’Neill responds to Celtic’s 2-1 loss to Hibernian and explains Auston Trusty red card
Celtic manager Martin O’Neill has spoken out following his team’s 2-1 defeat to Hibernian, a result that saw the Bhoys drop further points in the Scottish Premiership and fall six behind league leaders Hearts. O’Neill expressed frustration at the impact of Auston Trusty’s red card, which came at 1-1 after VAR deemed it violent conduct.
Speaking to BBC Sportsound, O’Neill said, “I thought we were terrific in the first half. We dominated possession, created chances, and got a late equaliser. The players put their heart and soul into it, so I have no complaints about their effort.”
The Celtic boss continued, outlining the referee’s explanation: “The official initially said he would speak to the two players, but VAR then judged it violent conduct, and a red card was given. I thought that was harsh, considering Trusty was being held by the opponent. Minutes later, we had a strong penalty claim when Scales was held in the box, but that wasn’t awarded either.”
O’Neill now faces the challenge of navigating Celtic through three crucial upcoming Premiership fixtures as his side tries to close the gap on Hearts.
