On the deadline-day signings
The manager said he was pleased with the club’s business and happy to bring in reinforcements.
He stressed the importance of adding depth as much as quality, noting that once the window shuts, squads are largely fixed aside from free agents. Injuries and suspensions can quickly leave a team short, so bringing in players across different positions was important.
As for what the new arrivals can offer, he believes they will contribute positively. He pointed to the recent additions who have already featured as examples, saying they’ve performed well and that he’d be delighted if the rest make a similar impact.
On Arne Engels and Nottingham Forest’s bids
The club rejected multiple offers from Nottingham Forest for Arne Engels, the highest reported to be £25 million. The manager admitted that figure represents huge money but praised the board for standing firm, especially given how late the offer arrived.
He was also pleased with Engels’ attitude, saying the player did not cause any issues despite the speculation. While acknowledging that situations can change in the summer, he described the decision to keep him as a strong statement of intent.
The manager added that the board turned down the bid before even informing him. When first asked about it publicly, he was unaware an offer had been made, as it came in very late in the day.
On Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain links
He confirmed he likes Oxlade-Chamberlain as a player and has spoken to him. The midfielder has been training with Arsenal after his time in Turkey, and while he may not be match-fit yet, he is working on his fitness.
The manager said he would be interested in a deal but acknowledged the player is likely to have several options, possibly closer to London. Nothing is guaranteed, but it is a situation he finds appealing.
On the title race
Despite the new arrivals, his outlook on the title race hasn’t changed. He reiterated that his side are chasing from behind and that the situation remains in their rivals’ hands, with fewer games left to play.
On Oxlade-Chamberlain’s interest
He suggested the player seemed enthusiastic about the discussions. Oxlade-Chamberlain is familiar with the club and is close friends with Joe Hart, who has spoken to him independently. Still, the manager stressed that while the move would be interesting, it may or may not come together.
