Michigan is on the top of the list for a four-star running back who has been compared to Jahmyr Gibbs of the Detroit Lions.
The Michigan Wolverines are making a strong push in the 2026 class at various positions, but running back may be the most apt choice for this description.
From five-star Savion Hiter, who they may currently be leading for, to top-100 four-star Javion Osborne, another player Michigan could be at the top for, Tony Alford has the Wolverines in the mix for some of the best running backs in the country, especially with Texas’ running backs coach being poached by the Detroit Lions.
However, one player who has not been considered as an option published his top-six list this week, and Michigan was unexpectedly included in the finalists. This player is Deshonne Redeaux, a four-star recruit who is ranked as the No. 105 overall player in the nation, the No. 9 running back, and the No. 12 player from California, according to 247Sports’ composite list.
Rede aux a high school football player at Oaks Christian, the same institution that produced Zach Charbonnet, a former Michigan and current Seattle Seahawks running back.
Michigan extended an offer to him in April of last year, and he was included in his top-12 list in July of the same year. However, there has been no published information regarding his recruitment in relation to Michigan since that time, which is why it is unexpected to see the Wolverines included in the list.
And although it is a surprise, it is a positive one, as 247Sports’ Greg Biggins scouted Redeaux last April and compared him to one of the NFL’s most talented young running backs, Detroit Lions sensation Jahmyr Gibbs: One of the most accomplished athletes in the country who participates in two sports.
As well as being a dominant rushing back, he is also a top sprinter. Due to an injury, I was unable to participate in the sophomore track season, despite setting a personal best of 10.42 in the 100 m and 21.3 in the 100 m as a freshman. Speed is also evident on the football pitch. A genuine threat to hit a home run from any position on the pitch.
Has a tendency to wiggle, is capable of causing a defender to miss in the open field, and sprints with force. This individual possesses a robust upper body, a sturdy frame, and the ability to effectively transport 195 pounds. Although he concentrated on running back as a sophomore, he played cornerback as a freshman and was known to lay out opponents. He possesses a physical edge.
Decisive runner who does not attempt to be overly cute or dance, strikes the hole, and is not apprehensive about initiating contact. Captures the ball effectively from the backfield, including deep passes down the slot and wheel routes. Redeaux’s junior season will be crucial for him to demonstrate his ability to be a durable, every-down back.
However, his ceiling is high, and he is projected as a high-major Power 4 prospect. From the sounds of it, the Gibbs comparison may be accurate. Redeaux seems to be a facilitator who is adaptable and can position himself in a variety of positions, causing defenders to look foolish. He possesses the game-changing speed and between-the-tackles tenacity, which are evident in his junior year highlights.
