MIKEL ARTETA DISCLOSES ARSENAL’S SUMMER PLANS FOR THOMAS PARTEY
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has verified that discussions are scheduled to occur regarding the
future of Thomas Partey at the club, recognising the midfielder’s substantial contribution to the team. The 31-year-old Ghanaian international has experienced a resurgence this season, having already accumulated more Premier League minutes (799) than he did in the entire 2023/24 campaign (789). In the 2024/25 season, Partey has made 13 appearances in all competitions, scored once, and earned 12 starting positions. He joined Arsenal from Atletico Madrid in 2020 for £45 million (€53.7m, $58m). Arteta has commended Partey’s recent performance and adaptability, recognising his significance to the team as his contract nears its conclusion next summer, despite occasional criticism. Arteta informed reporters on Friday that the sole requirement was for Thomas to achieve the desired level. He is able to acclimatise to a variety of demands and is performing exceptionally well in various positions, working diligently. Arteta stated, “He is a significant asset to us.” He also stated, “He is in a very favourable position, and we will engage in these discussions regarding his future with Arsenal.”
Arsenal was previously anticipated to permit Partey to complete his contract and subsequently depart the club, as sources suggested that the club was unlikely to extend his current £200,000-per-week contract. Arsenal has been emphasising the development of youthful talent for the future, with the midfield lineup being strengthened by players such as Declan Rice, Jorginho, and summer signing Mikel Merino. Partey has been recently associated with Barcelona, Juventus, and even a prospective transfer to the Saudi Pro League. Nevertheless, Arteta may decide to retain him as an experienced option for the 2025/26 season, given his recent resurgence in form. This decision could be invaluable for the team’s depth and leadership. Arsenal anticipates an eventful few months in its pursuit of a robust lineup for the future, as it engages in critical contract negotiations and ambitious transfer targets.
