Five Arsenal players are said to be missing from first-team practices before their first game in the UEFA Champions League, which is against Atalanta.

Five important players didn’t show up to training, which could cause Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta problems when deciding which players to use in their Champions League opener against Atalanta on Thursday.

Arsenal is getting ready to fly to Italy on Wednesday afternoon, after a hard-fought 1-0 win over foes Tottenham Hotspur in the North London Derby. That being said, there are worries about the availability of a number of first-team players, since the team trained at the Sobha Realty Training Center earlier today.

Riccardo Calafiori, an Italian defender who missed the derby because of a calf injury he got while on international business, was seen training and is likely to be with the team going to Italy. Fans of Arsenal were also glad to see Bukayo Saka work normally, even though he had to leave the Spurs game early on Sunday because of cramps.

The illness list is still a worry, though. It was not seen that captain Martin Odegaard and midfielder Mikel Merino went to exercise. They are still healing from injuries to their ankles and shoulders, respectively.

Oleksandr Zinchenko and Takehiro Tomiyasu were also not there, which made Arteta’s defensive choices even less stable. Kieran Tierney was also not there because he is still healing from a hamstring injury he got at the Euros.

A lot of Arsenal’s young players were called up to train with the first team to make up for the stars who were out. Ethan Nwaneri and Myles Lewis-Skelly were added to the group. They have both been training regularly with the senior team this season. Zane Monlouis, Nathan Butler-Oyedeji, and Josh Robinson also joined.

Arsenal has eight group games in the Champions League, so their schedule is very full. The Gunners will then host Paris Saint-Germain at the Emirates Stadium, so it’s important for Arteta to get all three points in Italy. Arsenal will also play Shakhtar Donetsk, Inter Milan, Sporting CP, AS Monaco, GNK Dinamo, and Girona in the league phase. They will also play Atalanta and PSG.

Arsenal’s plans could be thrown off by injuries, so Arteta will be hoping for good news on his injured players before Thursday’s big game.
