Rangers Reopen Talks With Danny Rohl as Search for New Manager Continues Amid Fresh Setbacks
Rangers are once again in discussions with Danny Rohl as they continue their search for a new manager — though sources have indicated that two names remain firmly in contention for the vacant role at Ibrox, according to reports.
It has now been more than two weeks since Russell Martin was dismissed as Rangers manager, and the club’s hunt for his successor has been anything but straightforward. The Glasgow giants have faced a series of setbacks, the latest being the collapse of a deal to appoint Kevin Muscat, which reportedly fell through late on Sunday evening.
Over the weekend, Rangers were held to a 2–2 draw at home by Dundee United, with captain James Tavernier rescuing a late point for the hosts. The side was led by the interim coaching team of Steven Smith, Brian Gilmour, Rhys Owen, and Sal Bibbo, who remain in temporary charge while the board scrambles to secure a permanent replacement.
Rohl Back in the Frame – Plus a Mystery Candidate
Rangers’ managerial search has become increasingly complicated, with multiple candidates turning down the opportunity at various stages. Both Muscat and Rohl previously withdrew from contention, but the latter is now reportedly back in talks. Meanwhile, claims there is also a “secret name” under consideration for the position.
Former manager Steven Gerrard was another close option earlier in the process, but ultimately decided the timing wasn’t right for an Ibrox return.
Rangers now face a demanding run of fixtures, including a Europa League clash with Brann on Thursday, followed by Kilmarnock in the Premiership and a trip to Hibernian to close out October. The second Old Firm Derby of the season looms at the start of November, and the club are desperate to have a new manager in place before then.
Mounting Pressure on Ibrox Board
After a poor start to the season both domestically and in Europe, Rangers’ decision to part ways with Martin was seen by many fans as overdue. His appointment in the summer had already drawn criticism, and the team’s continued struggles have only heightened the frustration among supporters.
With Gerrard and Muscat both out of the picture and no breakthrough yet in negotiations with Rohl, Rangers’ situation looks increasingly urgent. There have even been suggestions that Gary O’Neil, out of work since leaving Wolves in December 2024, could emerge as a surprise candidate — though he has yet to show interest.
Meanwhile, interim boss Steven Smith remains a possible short-term option. While few see him as a long-term solution, some believe keeping him in charge until the end of the season could give the board valuable time to plan a proper rebuild rather than rushing another managerial appointment.
In short, Rangers find themselves in a state of limbo — struggling for form, short on direction, and no closer to finding the figure who can restore stability to Ibrox.
