Rangers are set to support new head coach Danny Rohl in the January transfer window, with the need for a reliable centre-forward now viewed as a top priority. Despite spending around €11.6 million in the summer on Youssef Chermiti and Bojan Miovski, the pair have managed just seven goals between them across 41 appearances in all competitions this season.
The lack of cutting edge up front has been underlined by the fact that right-back James Tavernier is currently Rangers’ leading scorer in the Scottish Premiership, having found the net only four times. With their title ambitions hanging in the balance, the Ibrox side are widely expected to return to the market in search of attacking reinforcements.
How much Rangers are prepared to invest remains unclear given their recent spending, but strengthening the number nine role looks essential if they are to mount a serious challenge during the second half of the 2025–26 campaign. Below are three strikers Rangers could consider targeting in January.
Joe Gelhardt (Hull City)
Joe Gelhardt has been in outstanding form since arriving at Hull City on loan from Leeds United. The 23-year-old has already scored 10 goals and registered three assists in 20 outings this season.
While Leeds are not currently planning to recall Gelhardt in January, that stance could change if Rangers were to make a serious move for him on a permanent basis.
Gonzalo Garcia (Real Madrid)
A permanent move for Gonzalo Garcia looks unlikely, but Rangers could explore the possibility of a loan deal if they decide to enter the race for his signature.
The Spanish forward impressed at the Club World Cup this summer, scoring four times in six matches, but his opportunities have been limited since Kylian Mbappé returned to full fitness. Garcia has made just three starts across all competitions this season, prompting strong links to a January loan exit, with clubs such as Aston Villa, Brighton and Leeds reportedly monitoring his situation.
Troy Parrott (AZ Alkmaar)
Troy Parrott has enjoyed a remarkable start to the 2025–26 campaign and is attracting growing interest from across Europe. The 23-year-old has already recorded 16 goals and three assists in 22 appearances for AZ Alkmaar.
Parrott has also impressed on the international stage, scoring five goals in two games for the Republic of Ireland in November to help secure a place in the World Cup play-offs. Celtic are believed to be among the clubs tracking his progress, but Rangers could be tempted to make a bold move for the former Tottenham Hotspur striker during the January window.
