Newcastle United are gearing up to strengthen their squad once the January transfer window opens.
With the mid-season market fast approaching, sporting director Ross Wilson is preparing to oversee his first major recruitment drive at St James’ Park. And securing Kees Smit is emerging as one of the club’s top priorities.
Reports on Tyneside suggest that Newcastle have mapped out a strategy to beat Europe’s elite—including Manchester United and Real Madrid—to the signing of the 19-year-old sensation.
According to The Athletic, the Magpies intend to move for Smit in January, believing a winter bid gives them the best chance of getting ahead of rival clubs. Their attempt to land him in the summer was rejected by AZ Alkmaar, meaning Newcastle will now need a far more “aggressive” offer to secure one of Europe’s most sought-after young midfielders.
AZ previously insisted that Smit should break their record for the club’s biggest-ever sale, currently held by Tijjani Reijnders at roughly £22 million. But The Athletic now reports that the Dutch side value Smit at a staggering £53 million.
A deal of that size would make Smit one of the most expensive signings in Newcastle’s history—behind only Nick Woltemade, Sandro Tonali, Yoane Wissa and Anthony Elanga.
