Newcastle United are in the process of finalizing an agreement with a Europa League club, and a £15 million player is expected to make an appearance at St James’ Park.

Matt Targett, the Newcastle United defender, is permitted to depart the club during the January transfer window.

After a fruitful loan stint at St James’ Park, Targett transferred to Newcastle from Aston Villa in 2022 for a sum of £15 million. However, the 29-year-old has been restricted to a mere scattering of starts since then. Targett’s most recent appearance for the club was in the Carabao Cup against Manchester United, which took place more than 14 months ago.

In that match, the left-back sustained a hamstring injury that ultimately resulted in an Achilles injury. His sole appearance of 2024 and thus far this season was as a substitute against Villa at St James’ Park on Boxing Day.

Target a high-earner at the club, despite his minimal game-time, and is out of contract in June 2026. Lewis Hall and Lloyd Kelly, who are capable of playing at left-back, have been recruited by Newcastle since his permanent arrival. Eddie Howe has also employed Kieran Trippier, Tino Livramento, and Dan Burn in this capacity.

Targett is reportedly being pursued by Bundesliga club Eintracht Frankfurt and Belgian Pro League club Anderlecht in anticipation of a prospective loan transfer, as reported by talkSPORT. At present, both organizations are engaged in the Europa League for the current season.

Target seeking consistent playing time and is contemplating departing Newcastle this month after an extended period of inactivity.

Additionally, the Magpies are subject to the Premier League Profitability and Sustainability Rules; therefore, it would be more financially advantageous to sell Targett outright.

However, Targett may be in line for a rare start at St James’ Park on Sunday (3pm kick-off) when Newcastle takes on Bromley in the FA Cup third round, a team from League Two.

Newcastle is presently in the process of finalising a deal that would allow Martin Dubravka to depart the club and join Saudi Pro League team Al-Shabab. This month, Dubravka will be 36 years old and will be out of contract at the conclusion of the season. He is not a guaranteed starter in the team once Nick Pope regains his fitness.

Newcastle’s impressive performance with Dubravka in the team, coupled with Howe’s desire to retain the custodian and secure him to a new contract, has resulted in the potential transfer being postponed. From a PSR perspective, the agreement of a deal appears to be a no-brainer.

Newcastle has emerged victorious in each of Dubravka’s seven matches this season, and the Slovakian has maintained five clean sheets. A deal is believed to be imminent unless Newcastle is capable of providing the custodian with assurances, which would entail a new contract.
