Fabian Schär Marks 200th Premier League Appearance as Newcastle Edge Fulham

Newcastle United defender Fabian Schär made his 200th Premier League appearance for the club on Saturday, returning from injury to help the Magpies secure a 2–1 victory over Fulham at St James’ Park.

The Swiss international came off the bench just after the hour mark, replacing Sven Botman, who was forced off with a head injury. Ironically, it was a similar issue that sidelined Schär last month, as Newcastle followed concussion protocols after his own knock.

With fixtures coming thick and fast, Schär could soon reclaim his spot in the starting lineup. Newcastle are set for a busy run — facing Tottenham Hotspur in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday before Premier League trips to West Ham United and Brentford, along with a Champions League clash against Athletic Club.

Manager Eddie Howe praised Schär’s return, telling The Gazette:

“It was great to see Fabian back. It was a difficult moment for him, but he came on and did very well. He’s been a near ever-present since I arrived, and the competition this season is strong with Malick [Thiaw], Sven [Botman], and Dan [Burn]. I’m delighted with how he performed today — it will do him the world of good.”

Despite Botman’s substitution, Howe confirmed the Dutchman is expected to be fit for the upcoming fixtures.

“He’s fine,” Howe said. “It wasn’t a concussion, just a cut — and it was the right call from the physio to take him off.”

Newcastle’s defence has looked solid this season, with Botman, Thiaw, and Burn all impressing in Schär’s absence. Howe also singled out new signing Thiaw for praise:

“He handled some tricky situations really well against Fulham. We were on top, but all it takes is one slip from a defender to change the game. I was very pleased with how our back line dealt with their counter-attacks.”
