Journalist Ben Jacobs says that Chelsea wants to make an appointment quickly and have already talked about a number of candidates privately. A lot of people are interested in Kieran McKenna of Ipswich Town, Michel, Enzo Maresca of Leicester City, and Thomas Frank of Brentford.

This news story also says that Chelsea “appreciates” Howe, but that no one has reached out to Newcastle about him. Howe led The Magpies to safety in his first season as manager. Since then, he has helped the team finish fourth and seventh in the Premier League.

Since more than 20 years ago, this was the first time Newcastle had finished in the top seven in a row.

Howe was asked about Pochettino’s firing after United beat Tottenham Hotspur on penalties in Australia on Wednesday.

“I’m shocked,” he said. “I think Mauricio is a fantastic manager who has done a great job at every club he has been in charge of.”

“He’s been a manager in a number of different countries, and I thought he was doing a great job at Chelsea. They were in great shape at the end of the season, and they beat us to sixth place.”

“It’s sad for the Premier League when a manager is fired, especially when it’s because of poor play.”
