Anthony Gordon has apologized to Newcastle United players and supporters for his red card against Liverpool on Monday night.
Newcastle rallied from a 2-0 deficit with ten men in an exhilarating match at St. James’ Park, appearing to salvage a point. However, Rio Ngumoha, a 16-year-old, emerged from the bench and scored the game-winning goal in the 100th minute.
Newcastle were dealt a significant setback when Gordon was shown a straight red card following a VAR review on a challenge he made on Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk, despite a positive performance.
Gordon’s expulsion occurred on the cusp of halftime, following Ryan Gravenberch’s opening goal, which had left the Magpies trailing 1-0. Newcastle appeared to have lost the contest when Hugo Ekitike doubled Liverpool’s lead less than 30 seconds into the second half.
However, the host team made a valiant effort to respond, scoring two goals, Bruno Guimaraes and William Osula, to bring the score to 2-2. Despite this, it was ultimately insufficient.
And Newcastle’s loss resulted in more than just a loss of points, as Gordon will be suspended for the next three domestic matches. Joelinton, Fabian Schar, and Sandro Tonali were also compelled to leave the match due to injury.
Eddie Howe, Newcastle’s head coach, responded to inquiries regarding Gordon’s dismissal by asserting, “I have observed it only once, and it was a rushed process.”
“I was compelled to observe it as the game was playing and had just restarted, and I was eager to move on.” I am of the opinion that there is no intention, and he has entered most likely too soon. I believe that he has attempted to withdraw and avoid causing any harm to Virgil by sliding in.
“I believe he is slightly unlucky with it; it is an unfortunate situation.” Everyone has informed me that it is an obvious red. I initially held a slightly different perspective; however, I may have been misinformed, and as a result, I have developed a sense of empathy for him.
Gordon’s late challenge was promptly perceived by Van Dijk as deserving of a dismissal.
“I commented to Gordon, ‘If that is not a dismissal, I am unable to comprehend the game of football.'” In my opinion, it was peculiar that the referee was required to visit the monitor. Regrettably, these incidents are inevitable in the sport of football. Regardless of whether he intended it or not, they transpired; we proceed.
Newcastle United’s apologetic statement is issued by Anthony Gordon.
Gordon, who was unable to participate in an interview following the game as a result of his red card, made an apology on social media.
On Instagram, he expressed his sincere apologies to his teammates and supporters. I had the best of intentions. I was attempting to generate energy in the game, but I misjudged the tackle.
“I would never intentionally intend to confront someone in this manner,” I also wish to extend my apologies to Virgil. Afterward, we conversed, and he is aware of this.
“More importantly, I am extremely proud of the time I spent on the pitch and the manner in which we performed tonight.” The atmosphere that you all create is what distinguishes SJP.
“I am currently more passionate about the club’s values than ever.” I will emerge stronger than ever, as I have done with every other obstacle I have encountered. I will see you in the near future
