Newcastle United lost on the road for the 10th time this season at Selhurst Park.

Eddie Howe said that he was “baffled” by how his team played in the final third as Crystal Palace easily won 2-0.

The head coach of Newcastle United thought his team would play much better after a 10-day break and after beating Tottenham Hotspur 4-0 the week before. It wasn’t good for Newcastle at all in the beginning of the game, when Harvey Barnes missed a chance and Palace had 20 overall.

Howe told the press after the game, “We were very disappointed with the performance, from the high of Tottenham to the low of tonight.” We let ourselves down in most parts of our games.

“That’s our fault. We need to change it.” On second thought, the time between games might not have helped us, but we knew it was there and knew we had to do better than we did today. We missed a chance to do something.”

Newcastle’s first shot on goal didn’t come until the 86th minute, when Elliot Anderson’s weak header hit Dean Henderson in the hands. After Jean-Philippe Mateta’s double, though, the game was already over for them.

In the beginning, Howe said, “It looked like we were in a good spot.” For the rest of the first half, we weren’t playing at our best, which made us feel nervous.

“Our rhythm wasn’t great, and we were glad to go into halftime with the score tied at 0-0.” I thought the second part would be a lot better. We probably played better in the second half until the 60th minute, but the two goals we gave up pretty much said it all.

Howe also said, “I agree that it’s annoying to only have 10 days to study.” Through the gap, we worked to keep our performance from suffering. We’re responsible for that; it’s not an excuse.

Now that Howe is in charge, he will try to make Newcastle’s attack better. They have a great chance to boost their spirits with a win over extremely bad Sheff United. Howe said this about what he would do to make things better: “Maybe that 10-day break did throw off our rhythm.” Palace played well, and we have to give them credit. We looked rusty in many parts of our game.

I thought our technical skills were better than that, and that was the only part of our game that let me down. I don’t understand why we gave them the ball and didn’t try to shoot around their goal. We missed the target by less than half a yard. I don’t think any of our games were in a good spot.
