It’s still not clear who Newcastle United will hire to replace Dan Ashworth at Crystal Palace.

Newcastle United is still looking for a replacement for Dan Ashworth, and the list of good candidates is getting smaller on Tyneside. United wants to bring the Magpies’ boss into the new office at Old Trafford, so he is still on gardening leave.

Back in Newcastle, they hope to have hired someone in the next few weeks. A lot of big names are rumored to be interested in the job at St. James’ Park. The club has a lot of respect for Paul Mitchell, who used to be the manager of Monaco, and has also looked at Brentford’s Phil Giles at different points in the hiring process.

But Dougie Freedman, the sports director at Crystal Palace, is also being looked at by the people in charge at Newcastle because of how well he has done at Selhurst Park. This 49-year-old man is a hero at Crystal Palace because he played for the team twice and coached them for a while.

In the past few years, Freedman has moved up to help run a very successful hiring drive that has helped Palace become a normal Premier League team. The sports director was a big part of getting players like Marc Guehi, Eberechi Eze, and Michael Olise signed. All three of them have gone on to become regular first-team starters.

It looks like Palace made a great move to sign Blackburn Rovers player Adam Wharton in January. The deal could be worth up to £22 million if all the conditions are met. Under Freedman, the most expensive player Palace has bought was Mamadou Sakho, a center back, for £26 million.

Newcastle are looking for a steady person who knows the market and can find a good deal or two. Ashworth has a good track record when it comes to hiring people. It’s also important that the new person agrees with Howe.

The Magpies’ manager has always looked for players who are not only good at their jobs but also good people who will fit in with his friendly team. A way of thinking that Freedman seems to follow.

A Freedman agent who knows him well told the Athletic last year, “Dougie is not only big on talent, but also on mentality and attitude.” He does a lot of research on the people he’s going to sign before he does it.

“He stays away from players who he thinks are big-time Charlies.” His summation is to the point. He is always looking for the next player, the next big thing, or people who are on the rise.
